CDP Endorses Kevin de Leon for Senate

The California Democratic Party voted to endorse Kevin de Leon this weekend at the meeting of the Party’s Executive Board in Oakland. Senator de Leon won 65 percent of the votes, clearing the 60 percent threshold required for the Party’s endorsement.

“Senator Kevin de Leon won the endorsement of the California Democratic Party for being an outspoken advocate for our progressive values. As President pro Tem of the State Senate, he secured an extraordinary set of achievements on climate justice, gun control and immigration, including the Sanctuary State law. That is a track record that strongly resonates with grassroots Democratic activists, and particularly with the young people and People of Color we need to energize in November,” said California Democratic Party Chair Eric C. Bauman.

In addition, Chair Bauman also added “Despite media efforts to sow division among Democrats, I want to be clear: this was an affirmative vote for a candidate, and the only ‘rejection’ happening is the Country’s mass rejection of the corrupt and incompetent Trump regime. Senator Dianne Feinstein is a formidable leader who has earned the respect and admiration of grassroots Democrats and millions of Californians, including the overwhelming majority of the folks who voted this weekend.”

The California Democratic Party also made endorsements for November Ballot Propositions, including voting to address the skyrocketing cost of housing by endorsing Proposition 10, which repeals the Costa-Hawkins Act, and to formally oppose Proposition 6’s repeal of the Road Repair Fund. Commenting on the vote in favor of Proposition 10, Chair Bauman added “The questions surrounding contributions from Trump supporter Michael K. Hayde to No on 10 clearly influenced the Democratic Party’s endorsement for Prop 10 this weekend.”

The Party also adopted a number of positions on legislation, including voting to support SB 822 by Senator Scott Weiner, which establishes California Net Neutrality regulations; AB 3080 by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, which bans employers from requiring employees to sign arbitration agreements as a condition of employment; and AB 1775 by Assemblymembers Al Muratsuchi and Monique Limon, which aims to ban new offshore oil drilling despite Trump’s attempt to open our coast. The Party also voted to oppose AB 84 out of concerns that enactment will move away further from the clean money politics Californians support. For a full list of Legislation positions, please click here.
